Title: Freedom

Leigh - October 21, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
Well, in many ways the U.S. sometimes sucks in regards to imposing on our freedoms, especially in recent years, that being said....it could be MUCH worse.

In Afghanistan, this young guy merely QUESTIONED why Islam won't modernize to allow women equal rights....now he's going to jail for 20 years (and was lucky to get his initial death sentence overturned). In America, we are often criticized and sometimes even silenced for speaking out about certain issues, but at least we aren't killed or imprisoned for life over it. Sheesh.

Yeah, Iran, Afghanistan, all those Islamic are very strict and pretty edgy about religious matters and rules, and of course the feminine status is in the kitchen to cook or in bed making kids.
Did you know an average woman in Iran walks on the streets like this?:

The only part of the body they are allowed to show its their eyes.

No legs, arms, tights, shoulders - No tights or any other kind of pants, tank tops or just t-shirts...

Thats sick!

There country needs people like that, people who take a stand and question beliefs/rules/religion, now they're gonna shut him up, let him rott in jail and hope that it will scare anybody else who would of had the nerve to do the same, times change. Whether they like it or not, the world evolves, everything changes, be it hundreds of more years, a womans job being just a housewife and baby-maker will not last forever.

Yep. It's insane. It goes far beyond the belief they should just be a homemaker....tragic that in 2008 this sort of nonsense and injustice still exists, then again that's what happens when anything is taken to an extreme.

SO TRUE!

So he's been kept an eye on, especially as his brother is already known as someone with "dangerous" thoughts. Hence, all they had to do was wait until he says something that would prove him the enemy of the state as they suspected him to be. And he delivered the code-word, women's rights. This is what has been done at all times in many countries, from history to present days. Made possible by people who would - whether they are willing or not - rather denounce others than possibly even being suspected to having the same views. In his case people who should know better, a professor and fellow students. Intimidation almost always works so why not imprison one person for his wrong views before those speak up who agree with him. There is always someone, some institution that has more power and is stronger than any individual beliefs. Such has even caused the Dalai Lama to go into exile.
No matter how progressive/modern/open-minded we think we are, there are always twice as much dogmatic, narrow-minded, obsolete thinkers.
And the strong bond between religion and state in Islamic regions doesn't make things easier. Years ago I heard an Imam, a guy who knows the Quran inside out, saying, the Quran is interpretable (and that goes for any holy scripture of any religion). This brings a downside to it, obviously. People read more into it than is actually written. Hence why many find things like the oppression of women justified, when in fact it is written that the woman is equal to a man, having the same rights as he does. Now I'm just wondering why they always seem to skip that part... Maybe cos that thing is always read by men, hah.
So yeah, at least that guy proves that there is an awareness that things need to be changed, which doesn't imply people want to listen and act to make a change. It's a looong process, and slow progress. Islam had more than 1000 years to establish certain aspects in people's minds so I guess they might need a few more years to think it over...

What they doing in some islamic nations specially to women an freedon of speach it's sick and barbaric but are we free from sin ? just a thought !

Nope. Who said we were? Humanity is full of flaws, and these flaws (ego, greed, heartlessness) lead to the humiliation and destruction of others in many forms and it's truly sad and truly horrific.

Anyway I also just read about someone in Jordan, some poet who apparently made some sort of sexual statements amidst words from the Quran. He's now off to prison for 3 years. Religious extremism is one of the most dangerous things on earth right now. It happened in the states with 9/11, in Russia back in 2004 (terrorizing the school in Beslan), and habitually in the Middle East, Africa, and so forth and has led to the civil unrest, oppression, false imprisonment and murder of countless lives.

Religion at it's core is meant to be a faith to be held onto for self-betterment, and a tool of love, yet in many ways it's become a tool of hate....and "sad" doesn't even begin to describe it.

Yea, I know plenty people that have to go through it and see it every day.

I saw a documentary in London years ago about a woman that was just like that and was about to wed her Islamic boyfriend (well they both were Islamic) and whilst she was preparing for this wedding, like organising what she was going to wear and all that jazz, he went back to his home country to sort matters out and she stayed in London, now, because her fiancee was away, she literally could not do anything. She had to call and get hold of him if she wanted to just leave the house to buy some food or drinks, or anything, I can't quite remember what else she couldn't do but just the basic way of life was completely restriced and she had to call him for permission. It actually made me feel so angry, people are suffering because of these extremist views which are only going strong because the men in these situations probably feel like they're a gift from god and have this slave-type-woman. Ugh. People need to come to their senses, life is too short to spend it begging for permission of an unfair authority.

Feminism all the way.

America doesn't suck. The American constitution doesn't suck.Americans don't suck. What sucks is Americans who take there freedoms for granted.

The guys who gave you the freedom that you have, paid the price.

Read a history book.Or just google "America". Lots of great stuff out there.

I'm not American but I appreciate what America stands for.
