Title: For Michelle's Birthday

Leigh - July 6, 2008 12:30 AM (GMT)
Last year we raised money for The Nature Sanctuary in honor of Michelle's birthday. This year people are asking about doing another gift and if they should do the same. Unfortunately the Sanctuary had to close earlier this year, so this year the charity to give to is The Flying Elephant Foundation. They give out 50k grants and scholarships to people who are working to benefit animals and the environment through the arts and sciences and it's mostly done via donations and via funding from ticket sales to Ashes and Snow's exhibits, which as we all know is a personal favorite of Michelle's. As always, any gift no matter how much is helpful when it comes to charity (it's also tax deductible).

Go here to donate:

IMPORTANT:

Under the "In Tribute" section, be sure to check "In Honour", insert Michelle Rodriguez in the name box, and for the note put:

QUOTE
In honor of actress Michelle Rodriguez's 30th Birthday.

After you donate, please PM me here or email me at webmaster@michellerodriguez.com (by Friday July 11th) and tell me how much you donated, so I can total it up and let her know how much was given. Thanks!

P.S. If you don't have a credit card but still want to donate, you can give by mail as well. The address to send it to is provided here:

Thanks for the info, Leigh.

pitdroid3 - July 6, 2008 02:47 AM (GMT)
I'll let you know what I can give soon.

Questions: When did that sanctuary close? And, why? (lack of funding?). Maybe I'm just not remembering, but what are these "Ashes and Snow's" Exhibits?

Leigh - July 6, 2008 03:24 AM (GMT)
Long story short, yes. Unfortunately it takes a LOT to keep the place up and the guy who owns it just wasn't getting enough donations on a regular basis (which is all it ran on) so he had to close. Not much anybody could do, so after 32 years, he had to close down at the end of March and try to find homes for the animals which was hard since his place was really a last option for some of them already. Sad stuff.

Ashes and Snow:
http://www.ashesandsnow.org/

Michelle also posted a clip from the Ashes and Snow film on one of her recent Myspace blogs so head over there to check it out. Anyway yeah it's just....visual beauty demonstrating the unity of man and animal. It's amazing. And people respond to it like none other. Recently I spoke with Colbert (the creator)'s assistant and she told me that at the recent exhibition in Mexico they had a total of 8.6 million visitors to the museum in 100 days. 300,000 of them were on just the final Saturday alone. That's astounding. I mean just look at this. This photography/film project may not be well known media-wise but it's revolutionary to those who experience it in person and within the photography and art world. It's kind of like a really great kept secret that needs to not be a secret anymore. Anyway a significant portion of proceeds from the exhibits and sales of related merchandise supports the great little foundation mentioned above.

Basically the foundation allows people the chance (i.e. funds) to contribute to and advance the efforts of preservation, education, and unity of man and nature through art and science.

Anyway, how much did we make last year? Anyone remember? :)

Leigh - July 6, 2008 10:19 PM (GMT)
I believe it was approx $780 raised in about 2 weeks.

Thus far in just one day we've got a total of $380 pledged/donated already, so I'm hoping we can hit $1,000 by Friday. That'd be pretty spiffy.

Leigh - July 7, 2008 12:48 AM (GMT)
Gotcha. We're now at $411 (in just one full day).

LoveMichelle4eva - July 10, 2008 03:14 AM (GMT)
Yay!I hope that this will raise up even more. :)

Lost Angel - July 10, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
Done, sent, didnt need to mail it in the end. :)
Aw, i want it to get to a thousand now! :D

Yea, i put £30.00, but on the receipt it said $30 dollars, so that means only £15.00 (in our cash) would've been taken out of the account then right?
They can have the other £15.00.........if that's right, so then it would be £30.00 in my money and $60.00 in the US. God im confusing myself, I'll get a bank statemant tomorow from cash machine.

pitdroid3 - July 10, 2008 10:04 PM (GMT)
I cash my paycheck tomorrow morning, then I'll send in $26. It's cool as long as it's by tomorrow right?

Oh, and be sure to tell her that I sent $26 'cuz I don't beleive she's any older than that. ;)

Lost Angel - July 11, 2008 05:04 PM (GMT)
26? Give her some credit, lol. She could so pass for her early twenties, she's got good gene's. ;)

Leigh - July 13, 2008 04:29 AM (GMT)
From what I'm aware of, the grand total raised came to be around $550. If others gave and just didn't report it then hey that's great. Really it's not a horrible pull at all for just under a week, especially since all the donations came from board members rather than the thousands of Myspacers. Last year everybody had a couple weeks and raised around $750. So in comparison it's not too shabby at all!

Michelle will be very happy to hear about what you guys did, I have no doubt. Thanks so much for your contributions! :)
