Title: Go with God little brother
pitdroid3 - May 22, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
Two days ago my little black cat, Leo, had to be put to sleep.
My mom calls me up at six o'clock in the morning, asking me to drive from where I live in Hillsborough to her place in Trenton (40 minute drive), because she noticed some blood in his pee and in the litterbox. As I'm leaving, I have half a thought to bring my camera and snap a picture of the little guy in case it's the last time, but I didn't go back for it, brushing off the notion as anxiety. I get there, the vet doesn't open for another hour or so, so my mom and I have coffee and pet the little guy. He sat in my lap (as he was liable to do) and we each pet him for a while.
After a blood test and an x-ray he was diagnosed with Diabetes, and it had gone on untreated long enough that there was nothing we could do for him. Even the shots he could get every day would only prolong his suffering. He had been losing weight for a while, eating like mad every day, but not gaining and ounce. My mom made the decision to put him down, so he wouldn't suffer any more.
I called this cat my little brother, 'cuz he used to follow me everywhere, have to see everything I'm touching, sit with me when I was watching tv or doing homework. Like a little kid following his older brother around. If I was in the shower, he'd be peaking around the shower curtain and waiting for me to come out. Doing homework on the couch? He push his way past my books and occupy my lap, forget what I thought I was doing, gotta pet Leo.
We call some people a "people person" because they are good at making friends and being outgoing, well Leo was a people-cat. Most cats are wary of strangers and maybe even people they know, not Leo. He loved meeting new people, going right up to them and sniffing them and stroping against their legs. We got him on Halloween and he was only a few weeks old. He had no idea where the hell he was, or who the hell we all were, but as soon as he saw the tassles dangling above him (from where my brother Sean's sweatshirts were hanging) he just started playing with them and having fun.
He bit me a couple times, don't get me wrong. Once, I was sleeping on my stomach and not playing with him (my mistake). He walked up along my back (he'd climb all over you given a chance) and proceeded to bite the back of my head to get me to get up. He'd dig his claws into me when he was softening me up to lie down on me too. If you laid flat, he'd curl up on your stomach, but first he'd kneed your stomach like dough.
You could pick this cat up and hold him too, like a little baby. He loved being held, feeling the warmth of your body. While holding him, if he didn't like the shoulder you were holding him over, he'd stand up with his paws supported against your chest and move over to the other shoulder. You could flip him over and hold him like a newborn child too (my mom would even blow rasberries in his chest). Many a time, Leo would even fall asleep in our arms. He trusted us that much, that once he was comfortable in our arms that he could just take a nap. Holding him like a baby with his face up towards me as he nodded off was an amazing feeling.
When they gave him the needle to put him to sleep, my mom got to hold him as he went to sleep in her arms one last time.
I believe this is actually the last photo I took of him, kind of fitting seeing as how I called him my little brother I think.

Leo Coe, with his little white bikini bottom (a while patch of fur between his legs) and his what's it called, that little collar priests wear (another white patch on his chest, rest of him all black.).
Go with God little brother.

Been there, done this; bought the souvienier T-shirt. It sux to lose your pet...But, just remember...There are other cats out there; trapped in cells at the pound; looking to you for an escape...So, use your jedi mind tricks to bring it out of the darkside of the force...
Beside; this one might not bite your head if you don't pay attention to it. :brow:

I'm so sorry, Bryan. But your cat is in Heaven with my 2 dogs and parakeet. They're running around and having fun. It hurts like hell, I know. But you have to remember that your cat isn't in pain anymore.

Heh, I forgot to add this one memory, my friend Wes and I were playing video games in my room and Leo was sitting next to us. My mom busts in with the vacuum cleaner, not realizing he's in here with us. He freaks the @#$% out and leaps onto Wes's back. Not onto his shoulders, not in his lap, onto his back. My mom stops, I start laughing and Wes says nothing because Leo is now hanging by all four paws (and the claws theirin) from his back. Completely vertical mind you, he just stays there 'cuz now he's stuck. I'm laughing my ass off as my mom pries him off Wes, and Wes God bless him, takes it like a trooper and says nothing through the whole process.
Damn that was funny (from my p.o.v. anyway).
Thanks you guys. The more I think about it, and especially writing it on this forum, I think he was a bit like Michelle or at least what I know of her. He was fun and outgoing, full of energy, but he was never a fighter or angry or mean. He was really kind of mellow most of the time and loved just hanging out and being with people. He never liked being along for very long.
I appreciate you all taking the time to say something, I'm going to point my mom to this thread too, I'm sure it'll help her too.

i am sorry for your lost as well my cat as if right now only 3 teeth
the rest were removed due to this disease in her mouth that causes her siesgers(I don't know if I spelled it right...don't think I did)
The 3 remaining still give her trouble. For years we thought she was turn her nose towards food cause she did not like it but it was because of the pain in her teeth as well. Her thinking ..not good enough for me to hurt.
She was in so much pain...she refused to drink water for a long time because it hurt her enough she would actually hiss at it.
Now she can only eat soft can food, get shots from the vet once a month, and sleep a bunch.
It does help a bit. Yet I fear I may have get put to sleep due to I do not want to make her live in suffer. The other cats and even the dogs in the house baby her. Especially my dad's cat...who pretty much hates everyone other than me, my cat, and my dad.
This has happened to another cat of mine. It took me 4 yrs to even want another. Like when my dog died I never got another dog.
Well anyways I am sorry for your loss, your cat was so cute. I can understand why your sad. hugs hugs hugs.

Aw, poor baby.
I know the pain, i grew up with so many animals, i had pet, Cats, Dogs, Lambs, Horses and a pet Cow. The farm pets used to follow us. We've had to watch them get put down or become ill and its painful when they die.
Sorry pit xxx
Jeanie - May 26, 2008 01:26 PM (GMT)
I read your message earlier.
I also grew up with dogs, cats, tropical birds, chickens, pidgeons and goldfishes. I hope I didn't forget an animal.
It hurts always to lose a pet and you have to think a lot about that animal. Try to get over it by getting as soon as possible a new cat or another pet. By watching the photo, your cat seemed to be a real comic cat I think, haha!!! She could even speak in text balloons!!! :D
As diabetic I know that animals can get diabetes too (dogs, cats, horses and monkeys, I know).
:)

Sorry man, just glad your mum knew to do the right thing, poor soul.
I can't beleive what it will be like the day my cat reaches his time, just like yours, very much an integeral part of the family, just like yours takes some sort of offense if you stop petting him to do something pointless in his eyes like go to sleep or work, hes PETRIFIED of the vaccum cleaner, also a bit unsure of the hair dryer.
strength from me to you man.
