Title: Avatar

Leigh - August 3, 2007 11:12 AM (GMT)
HUGE casting news!

I've been waiting 2 months to say this....but haven't been able to. I apologize that it comes on the heels of having already been released in the media. But even still the news is so great that it doesn't really matter from whom or how it's known.

Michelle has been cast in James Cameron's upcoming sci-fi adventure, Avatar! Written, directed and produced by the Academy Award-winning director, Avatar has a nearly $200 million budget, will be filmed using a revolutionary 3-D camera technology, and is set for a May 22, 2009 release date. Michelle leaves in October for six weeks of filming in New Zealand and plays an ex-Marine pilot.

"Michelle Rodriguez is someone I've wanted to work with since I saw 'Girlfight' seven years ago," said Cameron.

Nakita1031 - August 3, 2007 12:57 PM (GMT)
James Cameron? Wow. That's so exciting!! Is she the female lead in this?

Mima - August 3, 2007 01:02 PM (GMT)
Oh my gosh! This is awesome! :o

She's being cast in more and more films, so happy for her!

Can't wait to hear more about this film :D

Thank-you!

LostSoul - August 3, 2007 01:15 PM (GMT)
Okay...You knew about this for two months and haven't been able to tell us till just now?

Here we, every last one of us, has been crying in our beers lamenting that "The Battle For Seattle" would be the last time we see Michelle on the screen for "who knows how long", because of her decision to concentrate more on her clothing line, and writing & producing...And you knew that she was about to work with one of the premiere filmmakers of the past 20 years on what maybe his most ambitious film to date...And you just couldn't tell us because of approval and politics???

After all, you're our admin...You're suppose to look out for us...You'd never "lie" to us??? :brow:

Hmmmmm...

Well, anyway...Good for Michelle.

'Nuff Said! :kick:

pitdroid3 - August 3, 2007 01:37 PM (GMT)
I agree with LostSoul on the basis that we all were afraid it was her only movie in the works.

Leigh - August 3, 2007 01:37 PM (GMT)
It was hoped we could announce it here first, before anywhere else....and I've been SO amped about the moment I got to share this amazing news with you guys, but alas it just couldn't happen.

She's going to be in this massive film, and that's all that matters.

No, she won't be the lead, that's Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver....but let's just say you'll definitely see her name and/or face as a presence in the promotion of this film. She's definitely not a just bit part player. But yeah, she leaves in October for beautiful New Zealand. She'll be gone for 6 weeks, then be back for more craziness as we move into the nearing release of Battle in Seattle and development of her other projects.

pitdroid3 - August 3, 2007 01:41 PM (GMT)
So this was one of those super-secret "three" upcoming things you couldn't tell us about? And that project of going around the world making a documentary was another?

Please, please, please tell me that the third thing is that she's reprising her role as a marine in Halo 3.

Oh, and besides being done by James Cameron and being all high-tech, can you tell me what this avatar movie is all about? You know, besides being "futuristic" and "next generation" and "cool", what happens in it? :brow:

LostSoul - August 3, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)
True, it is "Battle in Seattle"...I was distracted. I stand corrected...

pitdroid3 - August 3, 2007 01:48 PM (GMT)
Leigh I completely understand that you sometimes have to keep stuff from us. Really I do.

LostSoul - August 3, 2007 02:07 PM (GMT)
My question to Leigh: What else about this movie has not been posted?

Leigh - August 3, 2007 02:08 PM (GMT)
It's a unique and cool concept. I've done a lot of research over these weeks (had a lot of time to, lol) and read an old summary floating around and basically from what I can tell of old information....in the future, earth's resources have been all used up and we're a mechanical society....all steel and no nature pretty much. People live on chemically developed supplements as "food" rather than natural vegetation. So we've began seeking vegetation on other planets. One of them which holds the greatest potential is inhabited by a slightly humanoid (yet physically advanced and far different looking) species. There's tensions however between the races and there's environmental issues with this new planet where humans can't walk around without gear, so in an effort to try to bridge the gap between them and us and achieve diplomacy so we can use their resources, the government develops a program where they take a human that's a good candidate and they create a human/alien hybrid from their DNA. They harvest and grow it quickly and it is "born" as an adult crossbreed. This hybrid, called an "Avatar", is controlled by the original person from whom it was made. It's kind of like playing Sims, you control your avatar from afar, well, people can live via their avatars on this other planet. The lead played by Sam Worthington is a wheelchair bound paraplegic war veteran. He gets to do this program, and has an avatar. They go to this other planet and he (as an avatar) embarks on an adventure of discovery and love and of course action/adventure ensues. BUT, all this could be moot, since there's been many rewrites and the script and development for this is so highly and completely secretive.

What's been officially announced/told me from insiders I posted in the first thread. What I've just now said was just based solely on my own personal research and should be taken with a grain of salt until more official info becomes available and we near it's release.

LostSoul - August 3, 2007 02:13 PM (GMT)
Thank you for the information...Impressive concept. Though, a typical Cameron mindset!

Again, thanks.

pitdroid3 - August 3, 2007 02:45 PM (GMT)
Wait! You didn't answer the other part of my question, is this one of those secret things? I'm guessing so, but how many other secrets are you holding up your sleeve? :brow:

Leigh - August 3, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
What? Yes.

Anyway, I should also say that this movie will be like half computer generated, half live action....and all in 3-D! And as far as the computer animation goes....Transformers had a $145 mil budget, Avatar has a nearly $200 million. Go off that, and you can imagine how sick the special effects will be. Also, it's important to know the company doing the CG effects for this movie? It's the same company that did the Lord of the Rings Trilogy! Majority of the $ is going into special effects....and the people behind everything from the art department to the musical scoring are the best of the best in the industry, hands down. Check IMDB and you'll see. The team behind this film has tons of little gold men named Oscar on their shelves, so this is going to rock.

They've been shooting principle photography for months, and are gearing up for the live action stuff in a couple months....there's so much pre, actual, and post production going into this film it's insane! Plus I mean come on this is a project James friggin Cameron (which by the way is his full name, lol) has been developing for 15 YEARS and it's his first major flick in awhile, so you KNOW this is going to be frelling awesome. I am so psyched about this one, even though she may not be the lead. Battle in Seattle will be a lead role in a reputable, dramatic, important piece and then we'll get a costarring role in Avatar....a huge, massive-bugeted major Hollywood adventure film decades in the making. So you see, when I tell you guys to have faith....;)

shanti07 - August 3, 2007 03:20 PM (GMT)
This is great news Leigh!! :)

I'm confident on how this movie is going to turn out with all the 3D stuff that going to be included. I can't believe she is going to be working with James Cameron. This is the guy who wrote and produced Titantic and Directed The first to terminator movies.

LostSoul - August 3, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)

All hail, Leigh!

Praise be, Leigh...We have faith in you...

Taliesyn - August 3, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
Whoa! I'm really glad to hear she's finally getting roles for movies that people will actually hear of. That Avatar movie seems to cross the line between science fiction and what we already have, so it'll be pretty interesting to see Cameron's view about MMORPGs. And with WETA and Gentle Giant taking care of the special effects, I can't wait to see what they'll come up with.

WETA was involved in LOTR, X-Men: The Last Stand and are now working on the new Chronicles of Narnia, amongst others.

Gentle Giant was involved in STAR WARS!!!!!!, 300, TRANSFORMERS, Harry Potter, Garfield, The Matrix, Charlie's Angels, MIB II, X-Men, and a ton of other films.

Dunno if they'll share the work or if one of the two will be the major company, but in either case, both have delivered many completely fantastic movies and I can't wait to see how great this movie will look. Oh, and both have experience in combining real and special effects characters so they won't be at the trial and error phase.

Kind of a weird feeling when something good happens to good people, that's just too awesome.

amerelie - August 3, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Woo!! Gooo Michelle! :) It sounds interesting, can't wait to see it.

I'm excited, grant it, she's not a lead, but that's just fine and dandy with me. I've been waiting for a new movie to start in the works for her since battle and I really can't wait now that this is gonna be in the works. This is great, thanks Leigh Leigh for the news!

yes he is.

Leigh - August 3, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
Aliens
The Terminator
Titanic
Dark Angel (tv series)

Plus a few more. Short but brilliant list. All of these projects he writes/produces/directs himself and all are smash hits than impact future audience members for years to come. He's a revolutionary really. He doesn't do tons of films, instead he creates and plans things for years and years and years before bringing them to life exactly as his vision desires, and b/c of that they are all classics that impact the art of filmmaking in some way or another. For this movie, he's personally developing this reality-visioned 3D camera system that will film as the human eye sees, so when in 3D it won't be that blue/red vision thing with paper glasses. Glasses will be needed when viewing yes but they'll work differently, and it will be far more advanced and mind-blowing than what you typically think of when you think of 3D movies. By the time this movie releases, he hopes most major theaters will be equipped with the appropriate projection systems needed to be able to show the film in most areas.

BekI - August 3, 2007 08:15 PM (GMT)
Oh, for sure, Shaun. I'm with ya.

When I saw Avatar in the title, I was like that sounds really familiar. no I know why. This movie is going to be huge. It really is an amazing opportunity for Michelle and I cannot wait for it to come out. James Cameron is a legend, the concept seems very current and interesing, the budget is insane and oh, it's being shot in NZ as well. So many great things going for this movie. Can't wait to hear more.

QUOTE
"Michelle Rodriguez is someone I've wanted to work with since I saw 'Girlfight' seven years ago," said Cameron.

As much as I'm sure she wants to work with him, HE'S wanted to work with her for 7 years. Holy sh....... :o

That's so freaking awesome.
