I wrote this story in response to a challenge Nikki put up on the Sana forum and basically the criteria was:

1) they had to have a road trip

2) The car had to break down

3) Someone had to slip on a banana peel

4) there had to be a pack of angry butterflies ( :blink: )

5) there had to be at least one other person

so yea R&R, hope you like....

In the beginning
He took her hand in his and they ran, they ran as fast as they could although it seemed like they were hardly moving. Darkness surrounded them and they could hardly see where they were going although through the darkness, far away in the distance they could see a light, they didn’t know what it was but it couldn’t be worse then this so they ran for it. All they could hear was a faint hum and the sound of their footsteps thumping on the ground in a steady rhythm. He glanced at the Latina beside him her hair flew behind her as she ran, her eyes wide with fear as it came up behind them, hunting them like an animal hunts its prey, they were the prey. He tried t run faster but his legs wouldn’t move. It was gaining, getting closer and closer, there was nothing he could do. He looked to the girl beside him and her eyes met his, and he knew they were going to die. He didn’t even know her name but there they were, alone and about to take their last breaths together. He let out a cry as the swarm of angry butterflies surrounded them as he began to drown in an ocean of colorful wings.

Wait a minute…..

Butterflies?!

James sat up and opened his eyes. What the hell? That was the third time he’d had that dream and it was starting to freak him out. He jumped in the shower and got ready for school.

SCHOOL

“Hey, James! Wait up” He turned to see Jack running to catch up

“Hey” He returned

“You ready for this weekend?” Jack asked

“Yep all packed. You?”

That night James and four of his friends Jack, Kate, Shannon and Sayid were leaving for a weekend away. They were borrowing Jack’s fathers’ range rover and were planning to drive till they couldn’t anymore.

“Cool so I’ll come pick you up about four?” Jack suggested

James nodded “Sounds good”

The day seemed to drag out endlessly but eventually lunchtime arrived.

“Hey stranger.” He turned to see Kate grinning behind him

“Hey freckles” He muttered

“Don’t sound so happy” She chirped “C’mon, the new girls’ sitting with us, she might come with us this weekend too.”

“The new girl?” James interrupted the bubbly girl

“Yeah!”

He followed Freckles to their usual table where his friends were sitting, and as she and said a different girl was sitting with them laughing with Shannon. James stopped dead in his tracks, it was the girl from his dream, the Latina.

“Hey there” She noticed him and smiled

James looked at her speechless

“James, this is Ana” Shannon introduced them

“Ana Lucia” She smiled and held out her hand in a mocking mannor

James took her hand in his and shook it

“Nice to meet ya.” He sat down, finally snapping out of his gaze

“Ana’s from Los Angeles” Jack told him

“fascinating” James drawled sarcastically “So you coming tonight?” He asked her

“Yea apparently” She nodded “You got a problem with that?”

“Nope” James shrugged wow she was certainly different. He began to eat his lunch; it was going to be a long weekend.

LATER

At exactly four pm the green range rover pulled up outside James’ apartment. He was the last one to be picked up so he was stuck in the back with her, the new girl….Ana Lucia. All their gear was in the trailer so there was enough room for them in the car which they were grateful for. Sayid sat in the front with Jack ad Shannon and Kate were in the middle.

“Alright! Let’s get outa here!!!!” Shannon shouted excitedly

“Hell yea” Jack floored the car and Shannon and Kate squealed until he stopped.

James rolled his eyes “Chuck on some music would ya?” He told Sayid

Minutes later pop music blared from the speakers

“What the hell’s this?” Ana screwed up her face

“I’m with ‘ol Lulu here” James agreed “This is bullsh*t!”

Sayid said nothing but changed the music to good old fashioned rock.

“Ah, Guns and Roses – this is better” Ana commented

“You like guns and Roses?” James was surprised

She just looked at him for a moment then starred out the window.

They drove for several hours, well after the sun had set.

“Man I’m hungry” James complained

“Me too” Kate agreed

There were nods of agreement around the car

“But we have three more hours of driving until we reach our motel!” Jack argued

“Jack I have to go to the bathroom so we might as well stop” Shannon told him

“Can’t you hold it?”

“For three hours?! And besides I have my period.”

Without another comment Jack pulled over the car. The girls laughed and the guys sat around awkwardly. Minutes later Kate, Ana and Shannon returned from the bathroom.

“Lets get some food” Ana suggested

They had pulled over in a tiny town and the only open store was a supermarket.

“Alright, everyone get yourselves something and we’ll meet at the counter” Kate ordered

James went straight to the pasty section and got himself a pie and some chips. He was making his way to the counter when he ran into Ana holding a packet of chips and a bottle of fizzy drink

“Nice and healthy” He snickered

“Just like you” She smiled staring at his pie

He nodded and they went and purchased their food with the others. They left the store and walked over to the car. James was intently occupied with the sexy Latina ass in front of him he didn’t notice the banana peel of the ground, apparently neither did she. Ana stepped on the peel and her foot slipped out from underneath her, sending her tumbling to the ground. James was following to closely he didn’t have a chance to stop and he tripped over Ana and not-so-gracefully joined her on the car park ground. Jack tripped over James’s foot but managed to regain his balance

“Ouch” James muttered under his breath

“Son of a….” Ana sat up swearing and holding her wrist, she’d landed on it hard and it was in a lot of pain.

“Are you guys okay?!” Shannon, Kate and Sayid helped them up. Jack had to sit down because he was laughing too hard.

“Fine and dandy, thanks for askin’” James grimaced as he scraped the loose stones that were pressed into his hands

“Let’s just go, we’re already running late” Sayid suggested. They piled back into the range rover and took off again. Ana and James each stared out the window and ate in silence. James snuck a glance at the sarcastic Latina, she was beautiful, he was attracted to her and it scared him. Mostly because of the dream but he pushed those thoughts away. He noticed her wrist was slightly swollen

“You alight there?” He nodded at the puffy wrist

“Yea I’ll be fine” She lied

“Jack where’s the first aid kit?”

“I said I’d be fine.” She argued

“It’s obviously not fine chica”

“Then why’d you ask smart-ass?” She raised her eyebrows

“Touche” He grinned as Shannon passed the kit to him

He tenderly bandaged her wrist, she filched slightly at his touch

“I won’t hurt you” He told her “Well, I might but I’ll try not ta” he rambled

She smiled “Thanks”

“No problem” He looked up, her face was inches from his. He found himself captivated in her eyes, as she starred back into his, their faces inched closer and closer until their lips were almost touching……

Then suddenly the car began to hum violently and steam began to flood from under the bonnet.

“Oh bugger” Jack swore and pulled over the car

Everyone groaned. Ana and James pulled away from each other awkwardly. And everyone piled out of the car.

“What’s wrong with it?” Shannon looked at the steaming car

“Overheated” Jack guessed After waiting a while he picked up one of the water bottles and poured it into the engine someplace and got back in and started up the engine

Everyone cheered and returned to the car.

An hour later everyone except Jack and Kate had fallen asleep. Jack glanced in the rear-vision mirror and smirked to see Ana and James leaning on each other fast asleep. He had noticed the chemistry between them all day. He nodded for Kate to look backwards and she giggled quietly at what she saw. She took out her camera and took a picture. A picture was worth a thousand words and in this case a lot more.

With the flash of light James and Ana woke up

“What’s going on?” Ana asked

“We’re here” Jack pulled into the motel and everyone trudged into their rooms and fell fast asleep wherever they could. They had a big day tomorrow.

Okay here's the next chapter of the roadtrip, hope you like it!

CHAPTER 2
The sun shone blindingly through the window James opened his eyes sleepily and looked around, he was in a small two person motel room – with five other people. Ana was lying between him and Kate on the bed, and Shannon way asleep beside Jack on the fold out couch while Sayid sat in an armchair beside the dusty t.v set.

He sat up and got off the bed, being an old bed it creaked something awful, waking up everyone else.

“Uh, sorry ‘bout that” He mumbled

“What time is it?” Shannon asked

“nine am”

“We should get going, we can get breakfast on the way, we have a long way to go if we want to get to the city by tonight.” Jack got off the couch with too much energy for that time of morning,

The others nodded in agreement then turned over and went back to sleep. Jack commandeered James into helping him load the sleeping figures into the car, and after a long struggle everyone was in the car and only Shannon and Ana remained asleep.

They picked up breakfast and drove for hours, the road seemed endless. They were driving through a small town when a police car rove up behind them, flashing it’s lights and sounding it’s siren angrily.

Kate, Shannon and Ana laughed as Jack pulled over the car and watched nervously as two officers approached the vehicle.

“Can I see your license and registration?” one of them ordered

“uh, sure” Jack handed over his license “It’s my dad’s car, we’re not from here, just passing through.” He grinned nervously

“Of course you are” The officer agreed mockingly

“Sorry I’m afraid you’re going to have to come with us”

“What? Why?” Kate argued

“There was a green range rove involved in a hit and run yesterday and we need to accompany us down the station until we can verify that you weren’t involved.”

“We weren’t even here this morning! We’ve been driving all day.” Shannon told the officer “This is bullsh*t!”

The teenagers were given no choice but to follow the officers.

“We could just run.” James suggested

Before they had a chance they arrived at the station, they went inside and Jack was taken in to be questioned at the station.

After an hour Jack still hadn’t come out and they we’re getting bored.

“This sucks” Shannon complained

“This really sucks” Kate agreed

Suddenly Ana had an idea, she went over to the officer at the desk

“Do you have a phone I can use?”

“Sure thing” He handed her a phone and watched as she dialed several numbers and began speaking in Spanish to someone on the other end. Minutes later she handed the phone to the officer,

“It’s for you.” She told him

The man took the phone, surprised and Ana went and sat back down, ignoring the strange looks from the others, they watched as the officer went and spoke to some of the other people in uniform and minutes later Jack emerged from the room he’d been kept in.

“How’d you do that?” James starred at Ana

“Let’s go, we’re running late.” She walked out the door, leaving the others no choice but to follow.

It was late in the afternoon when they finally reached the end of the highway

“Jack this is the wrong exit, you want to be in that lane!” Ana pointed to the lane on the on the right.

“I’ve made this trip several ties, I think I know where I’m going” He argued “And besides it’s on the map”

“No, the city’s that way” She protested

“Nope, I’m driving, you don’t get a say in it” He teased and pulled off the main road, after riving for only half an hour they could finally see something…..a beach?

“Funny lookin’ city you got here” James smirked

“Who taught you to read a map?” Sayid frowned

“Wrong turn off, sorry” Jack smiled weakly

“We should just stay here tonight, I’m sick of driving” Shannon argued

“Hell I’m with you there.” James stretched his legs out as far as he could but hit the back of Shannon’s seat.

“Alright then” Jack relented

They drove around looking for somewhere to stay

“What is this place?” Kate looked up at the large houses

“These people are loaded” James agreed, looking around

Finally they found a motel, it looked flash but it was the best they could find. They rented a room and finally stretched their legs.

“I need some fun!” Kate yelled

“Hell yea” Ana nodded

“Lets go down to the beach then” Sayid suggested

“Now? But it’s dark” Jack argued

The others agreed with Sayid and Jack relented, and they walked along the sand in the dark

“How’s your wrist?” James came up behind Ana as she walked along the water’s edge

“Fine”

“Your dad’s a cop?”

“How’d you figure that?”

“Chica I may talk slow but I ain’t stupid” He grinned

“Mom actually. Never knew my dad.” She avoided his eyes

“That sucks” James starred at the sand

“Not really, I like it when it’s just me and mom” Their eyes met and James became weary of the mischievous twinkle in her eye

“Whatcha’ thinking?” He asked her

She said nothing but shoved him into the water, James lost his footing and fell into the waves

The others heard the splash and looked back to see James sitting in the waves and Ana lying on the beach hysterical with laughter. The soaking wet James took one look at the cunning latina and chased her down the beach, Ana ran from him, shrieking with laughter up until the point where he picked her up and took her out into the ocean and threw her into to water.

Ana stood up gasping as the waves washed over them, James was bigger then she was and was able to hold his ground, Ana was not as lucky, the force of the wave began to drag her backwards, she didn’t realize what was happening until she was forced to take several steps away from James.

“James!” Sayid and Shannon yelled at him from the beach

He looked back at Ana to see she was almost out of reach for him, he took her hands and pulled her body to his. He held her tightly as the waves washed over them again and again, when there was a break in the crushing water they made their way back to the beach.

“You alright muchahcha?” He asked as they collapsed onto the sand shakily

She nodded breathing heavily

“Ana are you okay?” Shannon ran to her and embraced her in a hug, followed by Kate and Jack

“Yeah I’m good” She promised them

“You two should so and get changed, we won’t be much longer” Sayid suggested

Everyone agreed and Ana and James made their way back to the motel.

“Sorry” James muttered once everyone else was gone

“Not your fault” She laughed “Wasn’t all that bad anyways” She glanced at him

“You’re cold” He noticed her shivering

“Correct! Someone give the man a prize” She laughed “I’m okay”

He nodded as they reached the motel, Ana jumped in the shower first then James took one as soon as she was out, He came out and found her sitting on the couch watching the television

“What’s on?”

“Nothing, infomercials” She answered

“You hungry?” He asked her

“A little, you?”

“Yeah, what do you want to eat?”

“What is there?” she asked him

James opened the cooler “Um, nothing” He surveyed its contents

“So let’s order some food.” They decided on a large pizza and James dialed for the food, minutes later there was a knock at the door, Ana got up and opened it

“Tony?!” She gasped when she saw who was on the other side, holding a pizza was her ex boyfriend.

“Ana? What are you doing here?” he was just as surprised as her

“I.. uh, is that our pizza?” She nodded at the box

“Uh yea” He handed it to her “Wow long time, no see” He said awkwardly Havn’t heard from me since I read your note, to tell me you were leaving…. After you’d already gone.”

Ana smiled weakly “Yea the new place is really good…. Tony I’m so sorry, I didn’t know how to tell you” She rambled

“Well that’s okay, you’re here now, do you wana do something? I finish soon.”

“Oh Tony I would but I’m kind of with someone right now” She apologized

James picked that moment to show up at the door, he snuck up behind her and put his arms around her waist

“Baby what’s taking so long?”

The young man at the door became flustered, he muttered an apology and left. Ana turned and pushed the box into James’s stomach and walked into the room, he grinned and followed her in,

“You want some?” He smirked at her

She glared at him and took a piece. “You shouldn’t have done that” She growled

“O c’mon it was fun, admit it you liked it”

“That doesn’t make it better” She scolded him

“O so you did like it?” He teased

Before Ana had a chance to take a bite of her pizza James lent over and kissed her roughly, she tried to pull away, she wanted to be angry with him and show him how furious she was at him but she just couldn’t all it took was James’s hand at the back of her neck to stop her pulling away and she gave in, she didn’t struggle against him, she couldn’t anymore.

Eventually they broke apart, Ana regained her composure and turned away from him

James said nothing but took a bite of his pizza, grinning childishly

Half an hour later the others walked in the door to find Ana asleep on one of the beds and James snoring on the couch, They settled down and went to bed, trying to catch at least several hours sleep before the next day and the unknown challenges it would bring.
