"As far as music goes Ive been listening to "political stand" music lately to get me on the same wave length as the characters on this flick. I dug into my MP3 Library and found only 150 songs out of 3,500 that weren't just about the singers life, but about the world at the time. Its interesting how many contemporary singers only sing about themselves hoping we'll relate somehow. In the 60's & 70's there was lots of music about the world, about societies, about the people. Today its a hand full of musicians that really even give a sh-t enough to so much as mention the times and society. You've got U2, Seal, Jack Johnson, Dixie Chicks, Natalie Merchant, Ben Harper, Tracy Chapman,Roots, Kanye West, 2 Pac, and I only mean quality music you actually like to hear, (don't get me wrong) there are thousands of political stand music bands.... but the music's not hot. Here are a few of my choices.
Beatles: 'Revolution' (Acoustic), "Come together", John Lennon: 'Imagine', Marvin Gaye: " whats going on ", " mercy mercy me",Benny E. King : " stand by me" Bufalo Springfield: " For what's it worth', America: " Horse with no name', Don Mc lean : " Castles in the air', "American pie', Creedence Clearwater Revival: " Have you ever seen the rain" ,The Doors: " Riders Of the Storm" Simon and Garfunkle : " America", " times are changing', Bob Marley: "get up stand up', " One Love/people get ready', ' Buffalo Soldier'. Ben Harper: " Strawberry fields', " I'll rise", " How Many Miles Must We March", Young Bloods: " Get Together", Jimmy Hendrix: "castles made of sand', "star spangled banner', James Taylor: ' fire and rain", Grace Slick : " Somebody to love", Chamber Brothers : "time has", Canned Heat: " sick em piggies" ,The Verve : " sweet symphony", U2 'Walk on', 'One", Seal : 'Crazy', ' don't cry', Arrested Development : " Everyday People', Sly And The Family Stone: "Everyday People", Joan Jett: " Everyday People",David Bowie: " Afraid of America", The Living End: "prisoner of society", Kanye West: " Diamonds from Sierra lion', 'jesus walks", Gnarls Barkly " Crazy", N.W.A. ' Express yourself", M.I.A.: " Pull Up The people", " M.I.A.", 2 pac: " Changes', "Life goes on',' thug mansion' Naz: " If I Ruled The World", Bobby Mc Ferrin: " Don't worry be Happy', Barret Strong: ' Money', Pink Floyd: " Mother" , " Money", ' us and them", 'the wall', Cold Play :" Politik', Cownting Crows: " Long December', Morcheebe: " Get Along', " fragments Of Freedom", World looking in", Moby: " Natural Blues", Men At Work: " Down under", Doobie brothers: " Listen to the people", Aime Man: " Save Me", Nina Simone: 'Ne me Quitte Pas', ' Feeling Good", Natalie Merchant:' Life is sweet","Carnival' Nena : " Carpe Diem (sohne Mannheims Ragga Mix/radio edit), Nirvanna : "come as you are".........
Thats what Ive been listening to lately, but I just may have to switch up soon, because the vibe overall is communally melancholic. I have to remember that life is a celebration, a dance, I'm just reminding myself not to get too caught up in world issues, my grandmother always said if you pay it attention, your feeding it. So I guess what im trying to say is That if I stay focused on the problems of the world as opposed to the joy of it, i'll be feeding it's misery. Not my style, so I have a feeling when this movie is over, I'll be traveling to a different tune, maybe some fly house music, i could use a good month of sweat and dance.
Right now as far as hollywood projects go, I strum at a different beat than the masses in this field, I like taking chances, pushing envelopes, I like imagination, chaos, and surrealism. I think Im gonna have to sit on the producers chair to make anything Im really into happen. When I was a kid I always thought to myself, why do all these people I see around me go miserably to work, live, and to survive on paved roads. You know, like nine to 5's they don't really like, or doing things for survival because everyone does things this way ,and it seems like 'The Only Way'. This mentality is the mind set of most of the people I've ever met in little 20 some what years of life. I Guess I look at the world from far away and these people I speak of, look at it from a microcosmic perspective. Whatever the case may be, these are the kind of people I see behind desks making decisions on what you see in the movie theatre. A lot of them seem scared to take chances, you know, fear of language, fear of doing something that hasn't been done, Or just plain fear of failure. I personally have issues working with these types of people, I feel incarcerated, restricted, caged you know. Im searching for that group or alliance of fearless adventurers and storytellers of this generation, so I don't have to go into the Hollywood's "cage of frightened sharks" alone. The team is coming together little by little, Through it all, I focus on other things, can't put all your eggs in one basket. One way or another, Ill get that crazy ,wild ,generation Y voice, out there, nice and loud for all to hear."
Her music choices kick ass. Some of the songs she listed "Stand By Me", "Bittersweet Symphony", and the Bob Marley stuff is some of my favorite music ever. Speaking of Marley, it's freaky as hell that last week I struggled to choose between U2's "One" and "One Love" by Bob Marley as to what to put on MRU's myspace. I went with Marley, but just set the settings to where you had to click 'play' on the music box instead of streaming it. Now that I know she enjoys Marley, I reset it to automatically play. That's a freakish coincidence. Anyway, glad to hear she takes a true interest in getting into the mindset of her character and the environment of the film she's doing. And for those who know me, they know how eerily similar her comments on the average life and Hollywood are as to what I'va always ranted about, lol....freaky stuff. Anywho....hope you all enjoyed the read.

Leigh - December 2, 2006 10:45 PM (GMT)
I'd be a little more concerned about anyone who does not have Nirvana. ;)

Oh, for sure. I am a house/ techno freak. I love it all. It immediately puts me in a good mood. :) Her music choices are definitely awesome. Love The Verve, Bob Marley etc. It's cool that she's trying to get into character through music.
As for her outlook on life when it comes to your profession, that is one thing that I've always had in common with and respected her for and what made me admire her from the beginning. She doesn't do what she "should" do. The 9-5, sitting behind a desk, craving sunlight..... I don't blame her and I can't and won't do it either. There is no amount of money you could pay me. If I'm not happy in what I do, I ain't doin it. Simple as that. My friends and family worry about my decisions but ya know what? It's my life. And you only have one of them so.... And I'm sure she has experienced the same questioning from her family as well. I love people who stand up for what they believe is right, no matter what others may think. And Michelle is one of them. ;)
Thanks for the post Leigh.

I don't have Nirvana. Don't feel like I'm missing much.
I am IN LOVE with this song right now -- Aime Man, " Save Me" -- I listen to it nonstop. Highly recommend it.
Ben Harper does a beautiful version of "Strawberry Fields."
Good eclectic choice of music. I have most of those albums/songs. I am getting more into Nina Simone these days.
Mogwaid, "Creep" is her karaokee song of choice, FYI
shanti07 - December 3, 2006 02:57 AM (GMT)
2 pac: " Changes'
this is a great song also. I listen to it like everyday lol.

YES! my sister downloaded it a while back and made me listen to it. It's on my iTunes. awesome!
Oh my I think everyone, just like me, loves her choice in music. Very bold stuff. I like that her selection is a bit of everything. I'm very diverse when it comes to music too, I can't stay with just rock or just rap or whatever. I like her taste =)
Now that we get a bit of an idea of what kind of music she likes, I wonder what kind of books. Well more specific which ones, ya know? that would be nice to know, hopefully she'll get into that soon!

What is it with you and Aimys? :D
Anywho....hearing her music choices was great, but I loved her attitude on producing in the business and how much of a battle it is for her and what her aspirations are. Totally love hearing what's going on in that crazy head of her's.

Hey, some of my favorite artists/songs! I think I've heard about half of that list. CCR, U2, M.I.A, Simon & Garfunkel, Bob...wow, I know and love a lot of that stuff.
In the 60's & 70's there was lots of music about the world, about societies, about the people. Today its a hand full of musicians that really even give a sh-t enough to so much as mention the times and society.
*smacks desk* So true. I was complaining -- I mean talking about that a few weeks ago, I think either during the AMC's or Madonna's Confessions Tour broadcast (which was awesome, BTW). The music today is so empty. It's like they have nothing to sing about, which is shocking, considering the things that are going on. I suppose with the advent of technology, there are just more ways for people to get away from reality, and this comes out in their music. Sweet nothings in your ear, y'know? I think two of the best contemporary artists I've heard in recent years are Rage Against The Machine and Dixie Chicks, I love their new album, more power to them. I enjoy their musical forum lots. I'm sure there's more, I just can't think of it. But, that's an observation there, the music...really, was just overall better in the 60ies and 70ies. People were going through a lot, and they sung about it. Today, we're just so detatched. Anyway, cool list! No Eric Clapton? *raises brow*
That's cool that she's thinking about hopping in the producer's chair. I heartily agree, Hollywood has become a very unimaginative, constricting little place. I think when certain Powers That Be are attempting to control everything you see and hear, you're not going to find any creativity or vision, because creativity is the antithesis to media control. Can't be creative when there's a gun to your head, right? Everyone's so worried about who's going to be offended, no one has the guts to create something good or SAY something. I believe that's one of Mr. Bob Marley's lyrics! "Say Something..." In my opinion, the entertainment industry isn't going to get anywhere like that. Doesn't help that this generation has their heads in the clouds...I should know. :P Well, wait, there are bright stars within. Yes..yes there are. But anyway, interesting to see where her head is. Hey, more power to MR and company. Lots of Luck!
Thanks for messengering these things, Leigh!

Man, I love how she's so different in so many things compared to other celebraties, and how she's so real. She feels so strongly about everything she says. Man she's so cool!
P.S Loving the music she listens to!
Chase - December 4, 2006 04:50 AM (GMT)
some of the songs are pretty good. have them also on my mp3 player, but the other half are not my taste.
i'm impressed that she knows the german band Söhne Mannheims. they really have some nice songs
pips24 - December 4, 2006 11:21 PM (GMT)
I really liked this message. It's so great that she turns to music to build her role for this movie she's shooting. And i like that not all her choices are the obvious ones, she mentions some artists i love like Aimee,Natalie Merchant,Bowie,Pink Floyd,Ben Harper who is so talented and such a sweet person too(if you ever been at one of his concerts you know what i mean),Arrested Development,Tracy Chapman,Seal and Nas w/Lauryn Hill in "If I ruled the world" brings me back so many good memories... And the old school brigade, Beatles,John,Hendrix,James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel,Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone, their music will live forever and ever. Oh lol,and not a year goes by that i don't listen to a "Long December" and get teary eyed although i think The Counting Crows suck :P
I think it's great that she is still thinking about producing,i hope she can go back to her independent roots,i think characters are usually more interesting when there's less money involved lol Not sure about the "crazy, wild, generation Y voice" thing though,i hope she doesn't go the Reality Bites way, that's all i'm saying.
Nugs - December 5, 2006 12:51 AM (GMT)
ahh shes likes Jack Johnson nice B) Nirvana rules!!!
analulu815 - December 6, 2006 03:11 AM (GMT)
yea she really does have good taste in music! i kno alot of them. C:
Glitter - December 6, 2006 06:20 PM (GMT)
I like that she wants to get into producing some. Hollywood definitely needs some strong women in films, rather than just the wife/girlfriend roles(as I believe she turned down in Desperate Housewives...or is that just rumor? I don't know) Anyway, it would be very interesting and excitin' to see what she'd come up with if she formed her own production company. Good luck, Michelle. Go for it!
faith_angel - December 7, 2006 03:56 PM (GMT)
Great message and great taste in music
i love how strongly she feels about certain topics and isn't afraid to speak her mind

Geez, just come to Australia already! F*ck Hollywood. The sharks here are fearless and out of the cage. You can make movies without having to worry about people wanting to change sh*t, and eat vegemite sandwiches till your heat’s content.

I'm so fan of this Girl...This woman Rock's my world...I did read it b4...but I just thought that i don't need to say nothing. The songs she choosed those are all Good, some I love, some I like, some I don't like...The most important thing to see on it, is the idea. I think that people who trust in music to build things...Do GREAT Things!!!
Skayla - December 15, 2006 09:19 AM (GMT)
nice musical taste there, a little bit of everything.
now all she needs to do is start listening to Tool and i will praise her...

chris - December 17, 2006 10:32 AM (GMT)
hi friends, mhhh what do you think about, if michelle will be a singer? it would be funny or mega bad? muhhahaha
but sure sexy videoclips :P
LettyRocks - December 17, 2006 02:40 PM (GMT)
I think Michelle could do anything she puts her mind to. Like, I never expected her to come out with a fashion line. And from the preview of the jeans she made, it looks effing awesome! It's so unique, and SHE is totally hands on in it. So I'm sure if she ever did decide to pursue singing (apparently people say she's really good), than I'm sure she'd be great at it. She'd probably write all her own stuff unlike most new artists these days. I really don't think she'd ever do that though(record an album), but who knows? :brow:
Michelle_4ever - December 17, 2006 09:41 PM (GMT)
Great music choices!
And she is true...there are so little musicians nowadays that really write and sing about what's happening to society. Basically, today, they write about themselves, or something that they think will sound nice...(to the exception of few)
annie_mexiban - December 18, 2006 02:38 AM (GMT)
About her music choices, I have one quick question...
Does she not listen to latin music...
Like I picture her listening to Calle 13 or maybe Mana, I dont know, hand me a latin artist on that list...
Leigh maybe you can ask her or G...
I'm really curious...
gaba - December 19, 2006 11:59 AM (GMT)
she told that its not hot music, maybe she was thinking about this. Thats are only 150 out of 3500, just think about those 3350 you dont know ;)

Well, she's responded about her music tastes twice recently (here and on the Icons transcript). And also I remember her talking about her music taste several years back. All along it's always mostly been about hot dance-worthy stuff, alternative, classic rock, etc.
She's never outright expressed any overt love of latin music, although I wouldn't be shocked if she did like it to some degree, giving that is latin and all. I mean heck I even like reggaeton. LOL.
Anyway....if given another chance to chat about music I'll try to remember to ask, but I don't want to get too repetative with my questions seeing as how when I have the opportunity to hit her up and get a response I try to be selective with my questions. But still....if I get the right opportunity, I'll try to remember.
