EPISODE THREE, 'CRY HAVOC'

ACT I

SCENE ONE- ROMANTIC, SECLUDED AREA OF BEACH

The waves crash against the shore soothingly as Hurley spreads a blanket out on the sand, grinning from ear to ear at a smiling Libby.

“Finally,” Libby says, drawing the word with mock impatience. “Never leave a lady standing too long.”

Hurley, still grinning happily, bows graciously and gestures towards the blanket. “Ladies first.”

Libby sits, and Hurley follows, dragging their little picnic basket over to them. “We’ve been waiting on this for way too long,” Hurley says happily, opening the basket and starting to pull out various food items.

“Believe me, I know,” Libby answers, slapping Hurley’s hand away from the Dharma brand Oreos. She passes him a carrot stick, smiling gently at the disheartened look on his face. “Come on, Hurley. What happened to more fruits and veggies?”

“I’ve had enough of fruits and veggies!” Hurley whines. “I just want—” Suddenly, he freezes as a sudden roar sounds from within the jungle. His eyes go wide as he stares into the trees.

“Hurley? What is it?”

Libby’s voice is nearly drowned out by the second roar, this one much closer. Hurley gets to his feet as quickly as possible, grabbing at Libby’s hand to get her to follow. “We’ve—we’ve gotta go,” he stammers nervously, not removing his eyes from the trees.

“What’s going on? What do you see?”

“You didn’t hear that?” As if on cue, the smokey monster crashes through, uprooting trees all around it. Hurley lets out a fearful cry and starts running away, dragging Libby by the hand behind him.

“Hear what?! Hurley! What’s going on? Where are we going?”

“We’re running away!”

“Why? What are we running from?”

“The monster! The monster, it’s back!”

SCENE TWO- JACK’S MEDICAL STATION

Ana-Lucia is trying to get Jack to listen and focus on what she’s got to say. Jack is trying to concentrate on checking up on Aaron, though he’s really just ignoring her because he doesn’t want to argue anymore. Claire looks between the two, feeling the tension and wishing she knew more about what was going on.

“Dammit, Jack, if you’ll just listen to me—”

“I’m with a patient, Ana-Lucia. I’m busy.”

“Don’t just dismiss me, you self-righteous son of a—”

“Actually,” Claire cuts in nervously. “We’re done here. Aaron’s fine, I’m sure, and if anything happens I can go and ask Bernard to look at him.”

“But Bernard isn’t a pediatrician,” Jack says, looking miffed.

Claire gives him a small, amused smile. “And neither are you, Jack.” With that, she leaves the two quarrelers behind.

“There. You’re done with your patient. Now would you just listen to me?” Ana-Lucia looks about ready to start throwing punches.

“Actually, I’ve gotta go check up on Locke’s leg in the hatch,” Jack says.

“You’re avoiding me, Jack, and that’s not good. If we’re both gonna be leaders in this thing, then we need to stick together.”

“In what thing, Ana? I never agreed to anything. Actually, I distinctly said I was against all ‘things’.”

“Jack, you know that this is the right thing to do—”

Ana is once again cut off by the sudden appearance of Hurley, out of breath and clearly terrified, with Libby trailing behind him. “Jack!” Hurley leans over, panting hard, and Jack rushes to him, putting a hand on his back and coaching him to breath.

“What happened?” Ana asks, directing her question to Libby. Libby is about to answer when Hurley finally chokes it out.

“The—the monster. We saw it. It came after us.” Ana watches as Jack’s eyes widen in fear, and she watches as he kicks into hero mode.

“Where? Where was it? Did it follow you here? Did it do anything?”

Hurley shakes his head. Ana-Lucia turns to Libby, having no idea what they’re talking about. She notices Libby’s worried looks towards Hurley. “What monster? What did you see?”

Getting closer to Ana, Libby keeps her voice low. “I didn’t—I didn’t see anything, Ana. I don’t know what he’s talking about.” Now Ana-Lucia looks at both Hurley and Jack distrustfully.

“It was—it was over there, we were having a picnic, it came out of the trees—” Without waiting for him to finish, Jack hurries off in the direction Hurley indicated, Ana-Lucia hurrying behind him.

“Jack, what are you doing?”

“It could attack the camp, Ana-Lucia. I need to find it.”

“Find what? What’s ‘the monster’? Look, Libby said—”

“It’s this—creature. It charges through the trees and uproots them. It ate the pilot, right out of the cockpit. It’s dangerous.”

“Okay then, Jack, but Libby said—”

“You should go back, Ana, it could be too dangerous.”

“Dammit, stop for a minute and listen! Libby said she didn’t see anything!”

Jack doesn’t stop; his face is set in grim determination, his eyes just staring forward. He blocks out Ana-Lucia’s arguments, his mind only focusing on the horror that was the monster, and the sudden pressing need to find it.

SCENE THREE- FLASHBACK TO OR IN ST. SEBASTIAN HOSPITAL

Jack glared at the shrieking monitors, resuming compressions on the coded patient as was instructed by the attending. “Asystole,” a nearby nurse commented, as though mocking him. The attending, Dr. Hart, moved his worried eyes from the monitor and concentrated on the paddles he held. “Charge to 30, push another 7 milligrams of epi, now! Clear!” Jack removed his hands quickly, allowing Dr. Hart to shock the patient. “No change, resume compressions,” Dr. Hart said immediately. But Jack didn’t move. He felt the walls of the room moving in on him, and suddenly he felt the need to back away.

“Dr. Shepard, did you hear me, I said resume compressions!” Dr. Hart barked.

“I—I—”

“Oh forget it, get out. Charge to 30, and CLEAR!” Jack moved out of the OR, pulling his gloves off and tossing them angrily into a trash can nearby, before pressing his head up against the wall outside.

It wasn’t long before Dr. Hart joined him, glaring angrily over at him. “Time of death, 2:56,” he practically spat at Jack. “What the hell is the matter with you, Shepard? Do you really think you’re gonna make it as a surgeon if you lose your head the second compressions don’t work?” Jack didn’t answer, so Hart continued. “People code, Jack, and then they die. It happens. If you’re gonna be a surgeon, you can’t lose sleep over that.”

“I—I can’t do this,” Jack choked out miserably.

“Then don’t. Leave. You’ve been on since last night, haven’t you? Well, it’s tomorrow. Go sleep. I won’t tell your dad.” And without another look at the distraught resident, Dr. Hart left.

SCENE FOUR- THE BEACH/ SAWYER’S SHELTER

Jack suddenly whirls around to face Ana. “Give me your gun,” he demands.

Now Ana’s completely pissed. She stops following him and stands her ground, putting her hands on her hips. “No,” she says firmly. Then she turns and walks away.

Jack swears under his breath, before turning around and charging off towards Sawyer’s shelter, where he and Kate sit, playing cards. “I need a gun, Sawyer.”

Sawyer smirks and chuckles. “And I need a bottle of whiskey. Life ain’t fair, doc.”

“Give me a gun, now, Sawyer.” Jack can feel his face going red with anger.

“How ‘bout I don’t and say I did?” Sawyer clearly enjoys this.

“Dammit, Sawyer…” Jack looks about ready to punch him, and Kate notices this and hurries to her feet.

“Come on, Jack. Let’s get you calmed down.” She takes him by the arm and starts to lead him away, Sawyer’s chuckles bouncing off their ears.

“God dammit, he’s so irritating!” Jack roars angrily. “Of all the people to have the guns—why him?”

“Because he played us all, and we fell for it,” Kate answers quietly. “Why do you need a gun, Jack?”

He doesn’t answer, just wrenches his arm from her grasp and starts walking away. She follows him. “What if I can promise you that I’ll get the guns back? I’ve been working on a plan, Jack. I think I can do it. I can con him out of the guns, maybe you can help—”

“Save it, Kate. I’m not gonna help you manipulate anybody. You’re good enough at that on your own.” Without another word, he storms off, Kate still standing there, looking shocked and hurt. She turns away from Jack’s path and sees Sawyer looking at her, smirking triumphantly. It is then that she decides what she’s going to do. She’s going to get those guns back, no matter what.

SCENE FIVE- LIBBY’S SHELTER

Hurley is sitting with Libby in her shelter, obviously still shaken over his encounter with the monster. Libby is shooting him glances mixed with worry and doubt.

Finally, she decides to break the silence. “So, what exactly did you see?” she wants to know.

“This—this black smoke. It’s the monster, I’ve seen it before. It ate the pilot, and tried to drag Locke, and—”

“But, are you sure that you saw something? Are you sure it was there?”

Now Hurley realizes what Libby’s thinking, and he stares at her, looking hurt. “Are you saying you think I made it up? That I was just—just seeing things again?”

“Well, no, but, you see—I didn’t see anything.”

Hurley’s eyes go wide. “You—you didn’t?”

“I didn’t. Hurley, I’m so sorry—”

“N—no. No, I saw. It was there, I know it.” Hurley gets to his feet angrily.

“Hurley, maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it wasn’t really there. You should just calm down calmly face the fact that maybe you’re seeing things again, maybe your issues might not be as resolved as you thought—”

“No! How can you say that? I know it was there! How can you not trust me?”

“I trust you, Hurley, but I also trust the facts! I didn’t see anything there! Look, you’re becoming very agitated, maybe you should sit down, take a few breaths—”

“Look, I don’t need you to be my shrink. I’ve had enough of that. I need for you to trust me. But that’s obviously not gonna happen, so I’m gonna just go.”

“Hurley—”

“No, Libby,” Hurley says firmly, and he walks off, leaving Libby staring after him sadly.

SCENE SIX- FLASHBACK TO A BAR IN LA

Jack sat at the bar, staring miserably down into his drink, wishing he could climb into it and drown. Beside him, a pretty redheaded girl eyes him curiously, before moving down a few stools so that she was sitting next to him.

“You know,” she said softly. “Staring at the booze isn’t going to make it refill itself. Excuse me, bartender, can I get another drink for my sad little friend here?”

“I’m not your friend,” Jack said moodily.

The girl smiled at him knowingly. “Not yet.”

-----

Jack pulled his shirt over his head quietly, considering leaving a note and then deciding against it. His head pounded unyieldingly, reminding him of all that he drank that night—or was it last night? He had no idea what time it was, so he checked his watch, sighing when he realized he had a shift soon.

The light turned on, revealing the woman from the bar wrapped in blankets on the bed. “Leaving so soon?”

Jack looked at her almost guiltily. “Yeah, I’ve got a shift in a few hours.”

“I thought you weren’t going back to work? Or did I help you decide?”

Jack considered it for a minute. “I'm still not sure, but this is the only life I know, this job.”

The girl smiled mischievously. “Well, if you’re looking for a new life, I can help you out with that.”

“And what life is that?”

“A life on the edge, it's called,” she said. “Surely you’ve heard of it. It's crazy and scary and amazing. You'll never know what hit you.”

“Oh yeah? And what do I have to do in this new life?”

“Well, sleeping with me was the first step. The second is to get pretty drunk. And the third? Well, that's a surprise. You in?”

Jack thought about it for a minute, before nodding. “Just one thing first,” he said, zipping his pants up. “What’s your name?”

SCENE SEVEN- PATH TO ANA-LUCIA’S SHELTER

Ana-Lucia can’t stop herself from grumbling as makes her way almost violently through the trees. Damn Jack and his ridiculously large ego. He was so thick-headed, so convinced he was right, that he wouldn’t even listen to her. So now he was going to charging off into the jungle, facing off a bunch of smoke that probably wasn’t even there. Well, serves him right. That would teach him to just dismiss her like that. Jacka—

Suddenly, Ana’s thoughts freeze, as do her feet. A roar had suddenly sounded throughout the jungle. Ana’s mind spins as she tries to figure out what it could possibly be, but then it sounds again, this time much closer and louder. She starts to move slowly, as though making a sudden movement might alarm whatever it is. She wills herself not to look back, but of course she does, and of course she regrets it.

There, right behind her, is the black smoke, the monster, the creature Jack had told her about. Ana’s eyes widen as they take the sight in. A sudden roar issuing from the creature’s depths bring her out of her shock and she takes off, running hard and fast.

She can feel it right behind her, gaining on her, and she forces herself faster. She can make it, she can outrun it, she can—she’s falling, oh damn, falling, on the ground—

Ana gasps lightly as her body hits the ground. She attempts to scramble to her feet and gets her legs tangled up in some bushes. The monster grows closer, and with a sudden burst of courage, she turns to face it.

She finds herself transfixed by it, staring into the black depths of it. She wonders briefly about it, where it came from, what it wants, before she realizes she can see things inside of it...a squad car, an empty cradle, a bouquet of flowers with a ‘Get Well Soon’ card…she is amazed she can actually make out the words. As she stares at these items, she is so enraptured in this she barely notices Jack running towards her, his shouts or the feel of his hand on her arm.

“Ana! Ana, come on, we need to run!” Seeing Ana staring into the black creature scares Jack witless, but not as much as being that close to the monster does. He manages to gulp down his fear and concentrates on getting Ana-Lucia the hell out of there. “COME—ON!”

As though waking up out of a daze, Ana manages to get on her feet and allows him to pull her away, running just as fast as him. The monster follows, roaring ominously, and Jack knows that it’s not done yet. And he also knows they can’t outrun it.

Like a beacon of hope, Jack spots Ana-Lucia’s gun and grabs it before she can protest. She stops and moves to grab it back, but he shoves her forward hurriedly. “Keep going, go! We can’t outrun it!”

“So you’re gonna shoot it? It’s smoke, Jack! Now give me my damn gun back, you chauvinistic son of a bitch!”

“Just run, go!” Seeing that she’s not going anywhere, Jack sighs and turns so that his back is to her. “Stay behind me, don’t move.”

“Jack—” Her argument is cut off by the roar of the monster as it stops in front of Jack. Ana forces herself not to look at it, convinced she would not be able to handle seeing those things again.

Jack stares right into it, gun raised and pointed, letting it know that he’s not going anywhere. Behind him, he can feel Ana shaking slightly as she averts her gaze. He stares into the blackness, his eyes widening as he starts to see the images…the monitors, the attending, the bar, the girl and…his father, staring right back at him, as disapproving and condescending as always. Christian Shepard opens his mouth as though to say something, and Jack can feel the blood in his veins turn to ice. But suddenly, the monster gives one final roar and sweeps itself away, crashing through the trees in the opposite direction.

The pair stand there for a minute, not quite believing what had just happened. Jack quietly hands Ana her gun back, and she takes it without a word. Finally, she clears her throat and regains her composure. “Thanks.”

And he knows it’s not just for the gun.

EPISODE THREE, 'CRY HAVOC'

ACT II

SCENE ONE – THE BEACH

Eko walks with heavy steps on the sand, which sinks with each footstep. He has his eyes cast down to the dirt as he walks. He’s completely in thought.

"Hey, Eko!" A jubilant Charlie strolls up to Eko, obviously happy about something, clutching his guitar. Eko completely ignores him, something that does nothing to stop his bright mood. "Wanna hear this new song I wrote?"

Once again, Eko ignores him, and Charlie looks at him strangely. "Come on, man. Haven't seen much of you lately. What's up?"

No wonder. Charlie considers maybe that Eko's gone mute. Then he remembers. "You know, Michael told me what happened. It's not your fault. Things like that happen sometimes."

The larger man continues walking, and Charlie falls into step beside him. "You know, I think you're selfish." He hopes to get anger out of Eko, annoyance, anything. Just acknowledgment.

Charlie stops walking, glaring up at Eko's retreating back. "You know, you're not the only one on this island who's guilty over something!" he shouts, and Eko actually stops, tensing up. "There's some things I'd love to recieve penance for! But shutting myself out, shutting myself off-it doesn't take it back. You can never take it back. It doesn't change the fact that he's dead and I killed him. And it doesn't change the fact that I'd probably do it again."

He thinks his words have broken in, gotten to him somehow. But then Eko starts walking, leaving Charlie standing there, looking angry and sad at the same time.

SCENE TWO – THE CAVES

Jack and Ana-Lucia walk into the caves with heavy breaths. The two slump down onto the rocks, each out of breath from the run. Ana is cradling her ribs when Jack stands up and reaches for the bottles of water Sayid had hidden from Sawyer, beneath a small rubble of rocks.

He pulls one out and passes it out for her to grab. When she reaches out, she groans from the pain. Jack pulls it away and walks over to her, worry etched on his face. He sits down next to her and lifts both her shirt and her arm in the air, feeling her ribs.

Ana pulls away with him with a hiss of pain. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?!”

“Easy… I’m just checking to see if you broke anything. Or bruised.” He says, reaching out to touch her again, and when she doesn’t pull away, he brushes his fingers down her side. They both become silent, save for Ana’s heavy breathing. Jack gently presses down in one particular area. He looks up to her, and they connect their gazes.

It’s almost as if they’re speaking to one-another through their gazes, and when the moments over, Jack stands up. He coughs. “Your ribs are fine. You might have just pulled a muscle.”

Ana smirks. “Thanks.” She reaches out to grab the bottle that Jack had placed on the ground. When she takes the lid off, a piece of rock falls from the top of the cave, and lands with a bang. Ana-Lucia jumps up from where she sat and held her arms above her head, with Jack reached from behind to hold her to him.

Kate is standing in the front of the cave with her backpack pulled open, clearly here to pick up a couple more bottles. “Say-Sayid told me, uh..” She coughs into her fist while Jack lets Ana-Lucia away from his grasp. “I’m here to, ah, grab some more, uhm, bottles.” She walks further into the cave and around them to grab some bottles. She’s staring down at the bottles, but can’t help to look over. Ana and Jack are quietly talking, Jack reaching out to touch her, with Ana pulling away. Kate’s eyes squint when she realizes that Ana’s shirt is still pulled up.

Ana meets her gaze and looks down. She pulls her shirt back down, the Latina woman then turns away from Kate and back to Jack, causing Kate to slowly bring her gaze down. Kate then randomly grabs some bottles and slams them into her pack. “Sorry for disturbing you.” She whispers, clearly hurt, then turning around to walk out.

When she leaves, Jack chuckles, causing Ana to look over to him. “What?” she asks.

“Nothing.” He looks over to her with a smug look. “Just I’ve never seen you jump like that before.”

Ana rolls her eyes. “Oh, I don’t know. I guess seeing random large creatures in the middle of the jungle who want to eat you just doesn’t get to normal people. Only me.”

Jack stares to her with a smile, then brings his gaze down. Oh, how that comment reminded him of her…

SCENE THREE – FLASHBACK TO TATOO PARLOR

The place reeked of… well, he didn’t even exactly know of what it reeked of... but it defiantly reeked. It almost made him gag, and that took a lot, considering he worked in a place that most people named as the worst smell ever.

Jack shook his head as he placed down a pair of threes. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” He mumbled, shaking his head once again.

She sat across from him, not really paying any attention to him. Instead, her mind must’ve been reeling in what the tiny television in the corner was playing. Her white teeth were biting her full lips, and her almond-shaped, green eyes were squinted small with concentration.

Jack looked over to the T.V., then back to her. “Lisa?” He asked softly.

She jerked her head over to him and smiled. “Sorry, I guess I was taken away.. Uhm… Oh Jack! How many times do I have to tell you! You can’t place a red 3, with a black 3!” Lisa scolded and picked up the cards. “The only way you can pair a black card with a red card, is when--”

“It’s a queen, or jack. I remember.” He reached over to grab his cards. He began to shuffle through his tiny pile and grinned, before placing down a six of spades with his 3 of clovers. “Voila.”

Lisa laughed. “Can’t do it Shep’!” She reached over and picked it up. “You can’t place down a 6 when you have a three. Three’s go into sixes.”

Jack groaned and placed down all his cards. “This game’s silly. Where did you learn how to play this?”

Lisa gave a smug look. “My papa. Me and him used to play this all they time, I mean we practically invented the-”

“Jack!” A large man at the front desk called out. “You’re up man.”

Jack looked over to Lisa, who smiled, and shook his head. “I don’t know if this is a good idea...”

“Oh, come on Jack. It’ll be nice and easy!”

-------

Lisa couldn’t help but giggle when Jack sucked in a breath. His eyes were scrunched in with pain, and his lips were almost white from the teeth gripping on tightly. He opened one eye when he heard her giggle. “What? You think this is funny? I don’t see you sitting here.”

Lisa rose an eyebrow. “Oh really?” She sighed and undid her zipper and button to her jeans. She turned around and pulled them down just enough for him to see a tattoo of a flower along with a Japanese kanji right above her buttocks. She turned back around and winked.

The man tattooing Jack laughed and shook his head. “It’s those type of girls you gotta watch out for man... those are the ones that’ll make you stay up all night just thinking about them long after they’re outta’ your life.”

Jack looks over to Lisa and smiles. “Really now? You’re gonna do that to me?” He asked, feeling frisky.

Lisa smirks and shakes her head. “Never would dream of it baby... never would dream of it."

Lisa looked over to the entrance of the building and smiled. "Well, well, if it isn't miss Penny Wildmore! Damn, it's nice to see a familar face!" She walked over to the blonde and brought her in for a hug.

Penny smiled. "I thought I saw you walk in here!" She looked behind Lisa's shoulder. "My, my Lisa.. what have you got here? Who's that handsome man?"

Lisa grinned. "Jack's the name." She looked over to him. "He looks like he's about to cry... hey, listen. Here's our hotel room number.." She brought a pen out from her jean pocket and scribbled on her hand. "Drop by later, okay?"

Penny nodded and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Bye bye now." With that, she turned to walk out.

SCENE FOUR – THE BEACH

Sayid is chopping wood a little ways down away from camp. His body is damp with sweat, causing his clothes to become slightly wet. He grunts with each swing, his mind becoming clearer when the piece of wood would splinter in half. He finally stops and speaks: “Are you planning on staring at me all day? Or am I in the way of your view to the ocean?” He turns around.

We find Michael staring over. He shakes his head. “No man, just lost in thought. Thought I’d take a walk and see where I ended up.”

“Well, I can assure you that you won’t find anything entertaining here.” Sayid turns around and begins to axe away at the wood.

“Hey, man, whatever. It’s finally nice to know that people are actually talking to me again.”

Sayid stops and looks over. “And what do you mean by that?”

Michael shrugs. “I don’t know. I mean… It’s just the big honchos stuck me out of their little circle of trust now. I’m surprise you’re even allowing me to talk to you.”

Sayid stares over to him. “Michael, I’m not here to judge anyone. I’m here to look over for you people. I should be the last person to judge anybody.”

There's a beat as Michael turns to leave, before Sayid interupts him. "How did Walt know about the cameras?"

"What?"

"The cameras. In the hatch. How did he know?"

"He saw us, when he was in there. Good thing, too. Can you imagine what would've happened if we never found those? They could've just- just come and taken him again. You know?" He shudders at the thought.

"Yes. It is a good thing. We were fortunate to gain Walt back."

When Michael doesn’t say anything, Sayid turns around once again and begins chopping. Michael turns away and bumps into Locke. “Oh.. sorry.” Locke nods, and Michael walks around him. He takes a couple steps before stopping to turn, he finds Locke and Sayid talking quietly amongst each other. Michael shakes his head and turns away, knowing full well that they were talking about him. Bastards.

SCENE FIVE – ANA'S SHELTER

Ana-Lucia is trying to tighten her tarp once again. “Stupid thing..” She mumbles, pulling away with the tarp in her hand. She tightens the ropes around the wood that supports her shelter, and prays that it won’t fall. It does.

“Son of a-”

“Monkey’s uncle.” Ana-Lucia turns to look over to whoever spoke. Her face falls when she finds out its Sawyer.

“Oh, it’s you.” She stands up and begins to fiddle with her tarp once again. When Sawyer doesn’t leave, she turns to look at him. “Can I help you?”

Sawyer smirks. “Heard you and the Doc’ had a little one-on-one in the caves.”

Ana rolls her eyes. “Oh yeah? And who exactly told you that?”

“A little birdie.” He gives her a smug look.

“Did this little birdie happen to have freckles with brown hair?” Ana leans against the supporting wood.

Sawyer chuckles. “Well, you caught my messenger.” He crosses his arms. “So, is it true?”

Ana laughs and shakes her head. “Go away, Sawyer.” She turns around back to her shelter.

“Ah… Well, damn Chicka, I would’ve thought better of you. I didn’t think you were the Kate-type.”

Ana stops and looks over her left shoulder. “What are you talking about?”

Sawyer begins to walk towards her. “Oh, nothing. It’s just you’re acting like a dog with it’s master.” He stands very close behind her, so that she can feel his hot breath against her bare neck. “I mean… it’s like he tells you to lay on your back, and you’re jumping for joy at the chance. Or, he tells you to jump… and you answer with ‘How high?’”

Ana shivers as his hot breath tingles against her neck. This shouldn’t be happening, why is she allowing this man making her feel like this? Why is she letting him come on to her like this? Why is she allowing him to control her like-

“Get out of here Sawyer.” She breaks away from him. Her head is bent down. “I don’t need you drilling ideas into my head.”

Sawyer chuckles. “Me, drilling? Ha! Hey darlin’ I’m just tellin’ it the way I see it! Hell… even Freckles got a good laugh out of it.”

That had done it. Ana-Lucia snaps her head up and glares over to him. “Go away now, or you won’t ever see the day with children.”

Sawyer stares over to her for a moment before shaking his head and turning away. “Whatever you say… but hey, Lulu…” He turns around to look at her. “Next time, let’s try to deny it.”

Ana-Lucia glares hard as Sawyer walks out. When he’s gone, she shakes her head and rolls her eyes.

SCENE SIX – THE GARDEN

Sun and Libby are sitting amongst the plants and vegetables, each digging weeds out. “Oh man, I really didn’t realize how hard this actually was.” Libby comments, pulling a rather large one out of the dirt.

Sun laughs softly. “Do not worry, you get used to it.” She smiles over to Libby and yanks at another one. “They’re kind of big this week.”

“Wow, I sure make the right time to help you, hey?” Libby laughs, pulling another one out. Instead, she accidentally pulls out a carrot. “Oh…” She holds it up and looks over to Sun. “I’m sorry.”

Sun smiles. “It’s okay. Everyone does it on their first try. You should’ve seen Hurley. I don’t think that man has ever gardened in his life.”

Libby smiles deep at the sound of his name. “Yeah…” She stops weeding and begins to think of him. Suddenly, it hits her. Why didn’t she believe him? Why, of all people, did she doubt him?

She stands up and looks down to Sun. “I’m sorry. I have to be somewhere right now.” And without a word from Sun, she walks away from the garden.

She’s almost jogging to Hurley’s camp, her breaths coming in rigid and fast. But, she doesn’t stop. Not until she’s in front of Hurley, who’s sitting on the sand, watching the ocean’s tide come in and out… in and out…

“Hurley!” She yells looking down to him.

He looks up to her and raises an eyebrow. “What? Here to doubt me some more?” He asks.

Libby sighs and shakes her head. “Hurley, no… I believe you.”

THIS gets his attention. His head whirls up so fast, it makes his muscles hurt, but he ignores it and stares up to her with nothing but hope in his eyes. “Re-really?” He asks, his voice shaky. She nods and he just about jumps up with joy. “Yes! Libby! Yes!” Hurley stands up and takes her into his arms. “I knew you would! I knew it!”

Libby is laughing and shaking her head. “Hurley… I’m sorry.”

He pulls her away and shakes his head. “It’s fine, Libby. It’s fine.”

Libby smiles to him before nodding. “First things first though… I want to make a deal with you.”

Hurley’s face scrunches with curiosity. “What kind of deal?”

Libby smiles. “Well…” She begins to twirl with his hair. “How about this? I will believe you no matter what, if you just stick to fruits and veggies.”

Hurley’s face quickly dampens. “What?”

Libby kisses his cheek. “Please, Hurley? Just try to stick with it?”

Hurley scoffs. “You know what? Fine. Let’s just try to forget the whole monster-incident, okay?”

Libby grins and pumps her arms in the air. “Yes!” She jumps back into his arms. “Now, I believe we have a picnic to attend to.”

Hurley pulls her away. “About that… I kinda, sorta, maybe… invited Michael and Cindy along. Is that okay?!” He asked quickly, afraid she might not like the idea.

Libby grins. “Of course it is!”

Together they walk off, holding each other’s hands, walking towards their very solitude area.

SCENE SEVEN- FLASHBACK TO HOTEL ROOM

Jack sighed in the morning with a cough. He quickly sat up and felt a rush to his head. What did he drink last night? He asked himself while placing his feet on the side of the mattress. When he saw the half empty Jack Daniels 2.6, he realized it with an awe.

Beside it were various bottles with labels he’d never seen before. He groaned. What the hell did he do last night? When he stood up, an intense pain rose to his arm. Ahh, that’s what he did.

He looked down to his arm and looked at the art. Well, it wasn’t half bad… He was about to touch it, but remembered what the bearded man had to say about that. He shook his head and was about to wander into the bathroom, but his cell phone began to ring very loud. He jogged over to the carpet where his pants sat. “Damn it… damn it…” His fingers danced through the clothing, he really didn’t want to wake Lisa up…

“Hello?” He asked when he had found it and placed it up to his ear.

“Where the hell have you been?!”

Jack pulled away when his father asked the question. “Why, Dad?”

“What do you mean why?!” His father took a deep breath. “Listen, Jack, you have to come to work sooner or later- but the sooner most defiantly is the better. Believe you and me… the board isn’t taking this lightly, son. Get to work, or simply lose it.”

Jack held the phone to his ear for over ten minutes after Christian had hung up. Reality was finally hitting him… Why wasn’t he at work? Why did he allow something like this to happen…

He looked over to the bed, where a half naked Lisa slept. She must’ve felt him watching her, for her eyes fluttered open, and a very sexy smile broadened on her lips. “G’morning stranger.”

Jack didn’t respond. He simply stood there with his arms limp on his side, staring over to her. Time seemed to have freeze, and he didn’t know how long it had taken him to whisper: “I have to go.”

Lisa’s eyebrows came together, both in anger and confusion. “What? What do you mean you have to go?”

Jack began to move around the room, randomly picking up some of his things. “I mean I have to go back to work.” He stood up to look her in the eye. “Lisa, listen… this isn’t my thing. I have to go back. I have to.”

Lisa stood up with the sheets around her, her hands grasping them tightly. “No you don’t! Didn’t any of this mean something to you?!” She quickly ran up to him and gripped his arm. “Didn’t any of it?!”

Jack stared down to her. Their eyes held the connection, and then he simply turned away. “I didn’t sign a partnership, Lisa. I just simply signed a deal for a one-night stand.”

She sucked a breath and held a hand to her mouth. “Get out.”

Jack sighed and began to put his pants on. When he threw on a shirt, he looked over to her and held her eyes with his once again. She was beautiful. Standing there with her tousled hair, and wild make-up. But she would never be his…

“Goodbye, Lisa.” He whispered once again, then turning to leave the room.

Never.

SCENE EIGHT- THE JUNGLE

Jack sits in the middle of the jungle, on nothing but a log, surrounded by nature and the wild. He’s nursing a petite bottle of Vodka he’d somehow stashed away from Sawyer, so good, that even he forgot about it. And let’s say this, he wasn’t that mad about it.

He didn’t even look up when he hears footsteps coming up from behind him. He allows her to sit down beside him and question where he found the drink with her eyes. Jack turns to look at Ana-Lucia with a smile. “No where special…” He begins slurs.

Ana raises an eyebrow. “Buzzed alright? Jeez, doesn’t take much- does it?”

Jack shrugs and brings the bottle to his lips. He then throws is back, and ignores the burning sensation running down his throat. It makes him feel alive.

“Jack, we need to talk.”

Jack chuckles. “Wow, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard that from a woman.” He looks over to her. “About what?”

Ana-Lucia stares him in the eye. “Jack, we made a team. Not Jack with sidekick me. It’s Jack and Ana-Lucia. There’s no ‘Just-Jack’ in any of that.” She sits closer to him. “Jack, I’m tired of you always taking the lead.”

Jack doesn’t say anything for a moment, but brings the bottle of vodka back to his lips. He takes a small sip before handing it over to Ana-Lucia, who gladly takes it. “Ana, I didn’t sign an agreement to a partnership.”

Ana brings the bottle down from her lips and allows him to continue. “I didn’t sign one, because I didn’t agree with what you were doing. I still don’t.”

Ana looks away from him and nods. “Well, that’s life for you. Either way, Jack. This people are depending on us. Their lives are in danger.”

Jack glares. “Oh, what? You’ve got some miraculous plan hiding in your jeans? Ana… I’m going to do whatever it takes to lead these people into safety. Your way doesn’t cut it for me, therefore, I’m not going to use it or agree with you.”

Ana-Lucia returns the glare. She hands him the bottle and stands up. “Whatever, Jack.” She walks away from him, and then turns around just before leaving the scenery. “It’s called a partnership. And whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me.”

When she walks off, Jack sighs and kicks the bottle away from him. He was stuck with her… A part of him welcomes it, and the other denies it.

He never was good with partnerships.

nice work you two. i think we are going to have a remarkable season.

Yariene - July 31, 2006 05:07 AM (GMT)
I loved Hurley and Libby but I am sorry to admit that I had expected more of Jack because it was his episode correct?

To me Jack was acting a little weird. He was erractic and acting crazy and it seemed a bit out of character to me.

Jana always respected one another so I was a bit surprised to see them so at odds.

Also I find it kind of odd that Jack wanted to battle the monster but not the others.

If this were following the show then Jack would have gotten the tatoos after marrying Sarah, so it was a bit of a departure for Lost. I hope there will be more Jack-focused episodes. I am really enjoying the series so far, and can't wait for more. Thanks so much everyone for writing this.

But that's why Jack's losing it. If you go look in the preview thread there's an avi with Jack on it that says 'One of us is losing it'. And there's one that really funny(to me at least), that is a banner saying 'Our last boyscout is losing grip'. I think we're taking Jack in a slightly different direction than JJ and Damon would, hun. I think he's gonna be more 'on the edge', to use a theme from this ep. I mean, you have seen Jack when he's really pissed...right? He's a scary, scary man. But we'll have another Jack ep up sometime later this season (hee hee! We have a season! I'm a dork, I know this.) I think I should stop now, cause I might give something away and my cowriters/coconspirators won't like me much if I do...

Yea he's scary and freaking HOT to boot. I love angry hyped up Jack. He needs some lovin' badly -- ahem....

I kind of get where Yariene and Leigh are coming from though. We have never seen Jack go at Ana like that. Ana has always been the one to calm him without really trying, and vicer versa. I can see that being weird for people, especially for people who loved Jana, and like felt cheated when Lost just dropped the ball on them.

But never fear Yariene, making up is the fun part. ;) Keep reading girl, and thanks for the honest feedback. It keeps us honest. Alot will be explained in the next episode. :D

Oh yea Val that "Boyscout losing grip" was my banner. I hear ya. You didn't spoil what wasn't already out there I suppose. LOL. I still love ya.
